Functional English Skills – English in the City 5
The Functional English Skills – English in the City 5 course is designed to provide students with practical language tools for daily life in an urban environment. Much of the course takes place outside the classroom, as students explore the city and engage in real-world tasks. This hands-on experience allows students to directly apply their language skills in real-life situations, ensuring they feel comfortable using English in practical, everyday contexts.
Key learning areas include:
Following directions: Learning how to ask for and understand directions, navigate city maps, and follow instructions to reach destinations.
Public transport interactions: Practising listening to and understanding announcements at train stations, bus stops, and airports, while learning how to ask for information and buy tickets.
Writing and reading reviews: Developing skills to read and write reviews for restaurants, cafes, and services, helping students engage with city life online and in person.
Filling out forms: Learning how to complete forms for a variety of services, such as registering for events, applying for permits, or filling out health-related documents.
Social interactions: Practising conversations in restaurants, shops, and public places, from ordering food to asking for help.
Each week, students participate in excursions around town, where they put their functional English to the test by interacting with locals, visiting public institutions, and navigating various city systems. These activities not only enhance their listening and speaking skills but also provide valuable practice in understanding written signs, following spoken announcements, and responding to real-world challenges.
Teachers will provide ongoing feedback and guide students in mastering the language they need to feel confident functioning in an English-speaking city. By the end of the course, students will have gained the practical communication skills needed to manage daily tasks, whether it’s ordering in a cafe, filling out paperwork, or finding their way in a busy urban environment.
